Multiple RPS for a single OBS?

Postby robgratt » Wed May 16, 2012 12:09 pm

Hi,

Is it possible to have a single OBS replicating to two RPSs? e.g. a local one and a remote?

Thanks, Rob

Hi Rob,

No, it is not possible configure AhsayOBS to replicate to multiple AhsayRPS servers. It only works 'the other way around' (multiple AhsayOBS sending to a single AhsayRPS server).

Thanks.

This is a problem we have struggled with for 10 years. OBS can only replicate to a single RPS. We have our RPS server setup in the same datacenter near the OBS server so the data can be replicated quickly and stay up to date. This also allows us to recover quickly in case of a failure on the OBS server or storage. But, this is not adequate replication because we also want an offsite copy in case of a disaster in the datacenter. However, OBS cannot replicate to more than one RPS, so we have had to find alternatives for the offsite replication.

We have rsync jobs that copy data from the RPS server to offsite storage. We tried replicating directly from OBS using rsync and various other file syncing utilities, but this would cause occasional OBS problems with "file in use" type of errors while they were being copied offsite. rsyncing from the RPS server is better but not perfect and we don't experience as many errors, and when we do, it doesn't affect a customers backup job.

The best alternative would be a block-level replication system, like what you find in the expensive SAN solutions. Philosophically, we would prefer to keep offline backup storage on cheaper storage systems. The market pressure on backup service pricing doesn't allow us to charge high prices to support the cost of expensive SANS.

Ahsay, please realize that this is a problem that any serious backup provider using your software faces. As an alternative to enhancing your current RPS solution to support a single OBS replicating to multiple RPS's I have a suggestion:

Add support for OBS to use Hadoop as it's file storage. We could then setup very robust and cost effective storage with all of the redundancy needed.

Hello Jim

Thank you for your feedback.

In v7 we will be rolling out some new replication features such as the selection of individual backup sets to replicate and multiple threading to speed up performance.

But the most existing feature is replication to cloud which allows replication from AhsayOBS directly to a FTP/SFTP server or a cloud storage service, i.e. MS Azure, Google Cloud Serivce, Amazon S3 , DropBox, RackSpace, OneDrive, Google Drive etc. This will allow you to take advantage of increasingly low cost cloud storage services which offer higher redundancy.
