[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open backup device

Postby bmaiers » Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:17 pm

I have a customer getting the following error when attempting to backup a SQL database:

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open backup
device 'D:\BackupDataSQL\1219350252020\xxxxxxxxxx\Comp\
2008-08-21(21-00-00)_LOG_Comp.bak.2008-08-21-21-00-00-000.ADD'
. Device error or device off-line. See the SQL Server error log
for more details.

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP LOG is
terminating abnormally.

Anybody encounter this before?

May I ask if this is the initial backup for the SQL database in concern? The message usually suggests that SQL could not access the designated temporary directory.

Can you please verify if the "Log on" account of the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service has sufficient permission right(s) to access the designated temporary directory. You could do so by following the instructions below:

1. Open [Control Panel] -> [Administrative Tools] -> [Services] -> [SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)] -> [Log on]
2. Select the [This Account] option
3. Enter the Login Credentials
4. Restart the [SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)] service

Alternatively, you could also configure the temporary spooling of the database file to a directory path that reside on the SQL server.

Thanks.
