Performance

Postby kspare » Wed Jul 21, 2010 11:55 pm

we are getting ready to virtualize our office, and do some upgrades to some operating systems.

So one thing on our list is our ahsay install.

What we would like to know is, whats have people been using to achieve high performance, for things like local replication, or even backup?

We're currently running windows 2003 32 bit, but we are considering upgrading to windows 2008 r2 64, or even utilizing the backup box firmware which is now UBS.

For your information, we do have a lot of partners running their AhsayOBS servers on virtual Windows 2008 server (x64). Perhaps other partners with practice service providing environment can share with you their expertise.

Thanks.

Yes, you are right. As in AhsayBBF, AhsayUBS is based upon FreeNAS but it contains a lot more OBS specific OS and file system tuning. Therefore, using AhsayUBS saves you lots of time to configure each of these tuning yourself, not to mention that you can install OS and OBS all in one go in less than 10 minutes.

*PS You can install AhsayUBS as VM on VMServer and ESXi just as easy as you install AhsayUBS on physical machine.

So are you saying that UBS would run better/faster than on windows 2008 R2?

It is difficult to compare the performance of running AhsayOBS on different operating systems because there can always be additional tunings performed. But I can AhsayOBS running on AhsayUBS performs better out of the box than running on Windows 2008 R2.

Interesting, do you publish a list of things that you do to UBS so that we can replicate them on our Centos based OBS?

Is that compared to Windows 2008 64 or 32 bit?

Is UBS 64 bit?

We are revising our official documentation. This information will be available in our documentation shortly. In short, we have done the followings:

1. Disable updating of last access bit in the file system
2. Tune the kernel parameters (memory, network, disk I/O buffer)
3. Remove all unnecessary pre-installed service to free up more resources for AhsayOBS
4. Pre-install useful utility useful for AhsayOBS, like sharing AhsayOBS user home as SMB shared drive to facilitate seed load.

AhsayUBS is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit. It installs the 32-bit version by default but like AhsayBBF, you can simply switch this to the 64-bit version by selecting one of the options from the console menu if your hardware support it.

Right now, it is not possible to brand AhsayUBS yourself on our customization portal but we can do this for you on your behalf if you are interested. There is a fee associated with this service but I think there is a promotion going on for this. Please contact our sales for details.

Alternatively, if you are talking about branding the backup server after the installation, please refer to Chapter 8 of the AhsayUBS Administrator's Guide (download-able at our website).

Thanks.
